11/17/2003 Entry: "A disciple's meditation"

Another meditation (if that's the right word). A disciple looks out on a crowd...

Send them away, Lord.

There are so many. Tired. Hungry. Impatient....Send them away.It isn't my fault they're in this mess. They should have been better prepared. Can't people think for themselves anymore? It is high time people started taking responsibility for their own lives. We can't be baling out everyone who comes along. It would cost too much.Send them away.

I look at the crowd and all I can see is their folly and ignorance. That old man should know better than being out in the sun all day so far from home. Does that little boy's mother know where he is? Is it any wonder that we hear such stories? Parents should take better care of their children. And look at her. Surely she could have brought some food and drink along? She must have known what it would be like out here. Look at them -- like a great flock of sheep.Send them away.

But you won't, will you Lord? You'll welcome them as you welcomed me. You won't make enquiries about their suitability or berate their shortcomings. You won't be too busy or too tired or too important. You won't ration your kindness or look for gratitude. They come to you tired and hungry and you see beyond the crowd to lives in need. You meet them, welcome them, love them.

You won't send them away.
