07/01/2003 Entry: "Dealing with failure"

I wrote the other day about daring to take risks.

We won't always succeed. And God doesn't ask us to. What we're called to is the path he sets before us, knowing that in success and in failure he is with us to set us back on our feet and get us on our way again.
That's easy to say -- as long as you think you're winning.

But what do you do when you've put your heart and soul into something, believing that it is where God was calling you? When the siren voices have been saying for years that it's a waste of resources and you shouldn't bother? Knowing what to do when facing failure like that is not at all easy. Hang in there, or call it quits and "pull the plug"?

Wish I knew.

Crikey Richard. It's sometimes too easy to forget the people we trust and lean on lots (that's you by the way) can have dark moments too.

Lots of love and prayers.

The old phrase "What goes around, comes around". You help loads of people every day. Ministers need help too. I'm just glad, that if I did, I could help in a little way.

Selina, you've no idea how much I appreciate your words. Thank you.I wasn't talking about cycling, just getting some stuff off my chest after a difficult morning.

Richard, are you still talking about cycling? I think that many people in the circuit admire you tremendously for what you are attempting to do on the 9th of August. If you don't manage to complete the tour, I'm sure nobody will be upset. It is a huge ordeal. Look at the people who run the London Marathon for example. People admire them for trying, and hoping to raise money for a good cause in the process. We think you are great. Don't worry.

If you are not talking about cycling (I'm not sure how the "waste of resources" would fit in) then it is difficult. I have been in a situation quite recently, where a similar scenario faced me. Something that I was doing, that I believed was what God was planning for me - if only as a starting place, was put in question as to whether to continue or cease completely. I went to bed almost in tears and opened my Bible by chance at a random page and read something very applicable to the situation. Since that night, I have continued doing what I was doing and I am in no doubt that it was the right thing to do. It's not always easy, but unless you sow alot of seeds, you don't always reap a reward (and sometimes you seem to get more weeds than flowers!) But I suppose one flower is better than none, and who knows, maybe the seeds are laying dormant until next year.
