01/22/2003 Entry: "Appraisal"
I think of this blog (and indeed the rest of theConnexion) as being part of my ministry, though it remains personal rather than officially sponsored by the church. As part of my accountability I have to take part in a self-appraisal process that includes feedback from those to whom I minister. Which, gentle reader, is where you come in.What do you think of this blog? Is it a worthwhile part of my ministry, or should I be using the time other ways? What about the subjects covered? If you have any comments to make I'd be grateful if you would email them to me. All responses would be confidential and definitely not blog-fodder! Thanks in advance.

I'm fairly new to your site, Richard, but I do think it's worthwhile. I see enormous potential in the Internet as a tool for ministry, because someone on the other side of the world (like me!) could simply drop by, read something, and be touched by God in a very special way. I always try to be careful when I write on the Net... and I think we'll only know how many lives we've affected when we go to meet Him. :o)

Thanks Jeff: just for clarity, the appraisal process is to help me decide what's worthwhile in my ministry, not the "church beaurocrats" (bless 'em all!).I agree with you about new media, and blogging is a bit cheaper to get into than TV.

Of course, it's a worthwhile part of your ministry (and I dread the idea that church bureaucrats are in a position to question that). Churches must -- must -- embrace new media because in doing so, they embrace new audiences, new people, new flocks. I have scolded my own sister (a mainline minister) and her colleagues for not embracing TV and conceding that terribly powerful pulpit to the nuts who claim God. TV, the mass medium, should speak for and to and from the masses, not from the fringes of Falwell and Robertson and Bakker. Well, the mainline denominations lost TV and I say that they did so out of snobbery (it's a mass medium) and fear (it's new). Well, the mainline denominations should not lose out again. Fallwell has an effective site. That should be a wake-up call.
