11/19/2002 Entry: "Buy Nothing Christmas"

I'm strangely drawn by the idea of a Buy Nothing Christmas, even though we've already done significant damage to the credit card in anticipation of the festive season.Link via blogs4God.

I think I have always followed that advice to a certain degree. I have bought some presents, but usually they are small and always something I am sure is a great gift for that person. I am fortunate that my family and I agree that a small personal present is worth more than a large bought one.

Your post also reminded me that I don't like those toy drives where they only take new toys (and therefore have never contributed to one). There are enough almost new or gently used toys out there that children would give away, but no, they have to be brand new.

hmm - tempting, especially on my present budget! not sure the non-Xn half of my family would really appreciate it as more than plain stinginess! but it's a really lovely idea to put some real meaning back into Christmas and reclaim it from the tacky commercialised replacement that seems to prevail :(
