11/11/2002 Entry: "In Flanders Fields"
In Flanders Fields - John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on rowThat mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.

Well, that will teach me to jump in and make a comment before reading all that is originally there! Bene Diction has beaten me to it.Jan

Have a look at Bene Diction' s comments section for November 11, Remembrance Day.
Not only is there this beautiful one on Flanders' poppies, but several others from Commonwealth countries as well.

Reading this poem out loud always stuns me into thoughtful silence. A British ex-pat and a buddy posted Rupert Brookes and Patrick Magee's poems in my comments section as we also remember today. We have had to launch a re-education campaign in Canada, the younger generations associate poppies with herion.
