03/23/2002 Entry: "Speechless"
I'm speechless. No, really.I've just heard a report of the Conservative Party's spring conference. Apparently they are on the side of the poor and vulnerable. Daft, isn't it? Doesn't anyone remember the 1980's? I'm not a huge fan of our present administration, but it is shocking beyond words for the Tories to portray themselves in this way. They'll never get away with it ... will they?

Who mentioned socialism?

Justice did not entail socialism then or now. And I think if we did a real in-depth study we would find most of these commands directed at all of the covenant people, not the government in Jerusalem or Samaria. And again, is helping the poor lavishing money on failed marxist programs?

I sense that we have a different perspective on these issues Joel. Justice for the poor is (in the OT) absolutely the responsibility of the King, and in our day, the government.

Does the government have to provide that justice? Biblically-in terms of a massive socialized state? Samuel thought that Saul taking 10% of Israel's earnings was outrageous, what do we think?

What the Church should be doing is what the prophets did - calling for justice for the stranger, the widow and the fatherless. That's what the Bible says.

Does being on the side of the poor require pouring money into failed programs that claim to benefit them? Shouldn't the church be doing what the government has usurped and ministering to these folks? Is the Bible silent on all this? My questions for the day.
