02/08/2004 Entry: "Myth and Music"

To begin with, I think I can safely report that the craving I mentioned on Wednesday has passed. Sighs of relief are being breathed in the household and, no doubt, in the wider world. Of course, driving out the desire required considerable tooting on the tin whistle so the relief was attenuated to an extent but everyone has to make some sacrifices. But I digress.

Visiting my favourite tin whistle site, I came across the Elven Minstrel, who has written some beautiful Tolkien-inspired music, the sort of thing that makes me wish I was a more accomplished player. Further exploration of the site turned up an interesting article exploring Christian truth and Middle Earth, replete with quotes from Tolkien and plenty of other good stuff you'll enjoy if you're a fan of Tolkien's fantasy and a Christian. Musicians might enjoy the essay The development of Middle Earth music, which attempts to answer the question If Hobbiton of the Shire in Middle-earth were a real place, and I were a mouse in the corner of Bilbo's smial, what would I hear? Why? Well, why not? Does everything have to be purpose-driven? Some things are done just for the joy of them and this, I think, is one.
